William "Paul" Beckworth, 72, a lifelong resident of the Stapleton/Wrens area, passed away peacefully on November 6, 2023, at Doctors Hospital in Augusta. Services to celebrate his life will be held at 3:00PM Saturday, November 18, 2023 in the James Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Josh Mosley officiating. The family will receive friends after the service Saturday, the 18th.
Born on February 21, 1951, in Stapleton to the late Clara Annie Boone Beckworth and the late William Harrison Beckworth, Paul was a lifelong resident of the Stapleton/Wrens area and was a 1969 graduate of Wrens High School. He then went on to have a remarkable career. After completing high school, he worked for Kroger as a butcher for many years. When Ingles came into the area, Paul transitioned to working as a butcher there. After retiring from his butchering career, he dedicated his time to driving school buses for Jefferson County Schools. In addition to his impressive work history, Paul had a talent for construction. His skills were well-known in the community, and he could build anything with his hands. He often took on small construction jobs on the side and even constructed an addition to his own home. Since 1991, he also had co-owned Cheryl's Family Day Care with his loving wife, Cheryl.
Paul had a knack for teasing and cutting up with those around him, especially his sister-in-law, Connie. Outspoken by nature, Paul never shied away from engaging in lively political discussions with anyone willing to share their opinions. His passion for politics was unparalleled.
Outside of work and politics, Paul found joy in various hobbies. He loved spending time outdoors tending to his yards and gardens. Cooking and grilling were also among his passions as he delighted in preparing meals for his family. However, what truly brought him the most happiness was being surrounded by family, particularly his grandchildren.
Throughout his life, Paul accomplished many things that made him proud. Devoted to both politics and community matters, he served as a City Councilman, making a positive impact on the community he loved dearly. In addition, Paul selflessly volunteered his time and dedication to the Volunteer Stapleton Fire Department, ensuring the safety and well-being of his neighbors.
Paul will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Cheryl Wylds Beckworth, with whom he shared many cherished memories. Other left to cherish his memories include his brother, John Thomas Beckworth (Linda); his sister, Priscilla Irby (Reggie); children, Cheronda Grossman, Stormy Simon (Vernon), and Wendy Cowart (Richie); eight (8) grandchildren; four (4) great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Connie Wylds; other extended family and friends. Paul is also preceded in death by his brother, Enoch Beckworth.
As we say goodbye to Paul, we remember him for his lively spirit, his unwavering dedication to his community, and the joy he brought into the lives of those around him. His memory will forever live in our hearts as we honor the legacy he leaves behind.
