Walter T. Ensz

Louisville, GA  –        Walter T. Ensz was born to Dietrich and Anna Toews Ensz on the home farmstead at nman, Kansas on October 20, 1928. He peacefully fell asleep just as the sun was coming up on May 29, 2018, reaching the age of 89 years old. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday morning, June 2, 2018 at Harmony Mennonite Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

He spent his childhood and growing-up years near Inman. He committed his life to the Lord at the tender age of 13 and was baptized on April 12, 1942 into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, by Minister John A. Ensz. He was faithful to these vows until the end. He worked hard helping support his family through the hard times; sometimes only coming home for the weekends.

He found his companion in Luella Goossen, marrying on April 27, 1952. Luella died only a few short months later. Even though his heart broken, life had to go on.

Shortly after, he was drafted to 1W service in Santa Monica, California. While in service there he met Annie Loewen, marrying on April 25, 1954 which was the first wedding held in the new congregation in Glenn, California. After the completion of his term of service they moved to Glenn where four children born to this union.

On February 23, 1969, Walter was called to the deaconry, ordained by Minister Jake H. Loewen. He took his calling seriously and endeavored to fill his place in the kingdom in his quiet way. Having a heart for those who needed a “Dad” or a financial boost, he often reached into his own pocket to share what he had.

Annie passed away unexpectedly in February of 1993, again leaving Walter very lonely.

God was on the giving hand when he again found a faithful companion in Mabel Rooks Unruh from Louisville, Georgia. They were married on April 10, 1994 by Minister Curt Ensz. This brought an added blessing by combining two families into one.

In March of 1996 they moved into Mabel’s home in Georgia. He continued to serve in the capacity of deacon in the newly established congregation of Harmony Springs until his retirement in 2009.

Walter was not a big reader but the Bible was very precious to him.  It was very common to see him sitting in his favorite chair or at the desk with his cup of morning coffee and almost always an open Bible before him. His hands are quietly folded now but he will be remembered for how he provided well for his family, working long hours in the heat of the day. His love inspires his family to follow the exemplary path Walter so faithfully walked each day.

He will be lovingly remembered by Mabel, his wife of twenty-four years, his children: Robert and Barb, Othello, Washington: Marge and Milton Koehn, Versailles, Missouri: Dalen and Teresa, Muleshoe, Texas: Mary Alice, Cimarron, Kansas; Mom’s children: Robin and Jonas Bender, Hydro, Oklahoma: Eddie and Michelle Unruh; Darryl and Kathryn Unruh, Louisville, Georgia; twenty-three grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren. The Spence family became a part of the family after the death of their father; one brother, Henry and Lorraine, Inman, Kansas; two sisters, Margaret Fehr, Swanson, SK; Martha and Leon Koehn, Moundridge, Kansas; five sisters-in-law, Fern Ensz, Goessel, Kansas; Agnes Loewen, Sun City, Arizona; June Petrosino, California; Barbara Mims, Trish Rooks, Louisville, Georgia; one brother-in-law, Saint and Carolyn Rooks, Ellenwood, Georgia.

he family will receive friends from 6:30-8:30 P.M. Friday evening, June 1, 2018 at Harmony Mennonite Church.
