Thomas "Warren" Allen

Wrens, GA

Thomas “Warren” Allen

Wrens, GA  –              Thomas “Warren” Allen., 91, loving husband of 50 years to the late Betty Booker Allen,  entered into his eternal rest Tuesday afternoon, April 17, 2018 at his residence. Funeral services to celebrate his life will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday afternoon, April 23, 2018 in the James Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Dan Hollingsworth and Brother Mike Via officiating.  Interment will follow in the Wrens Memorial Cemetery.

One of nine children born to the late Mattie Rabun Allen and the late Albert Freeman Allen, Warren was a lifelong resident of Jefferson County.  He attended school in Stapleton but quit during the 6th grade to help on the family farm. He met and married the love of his life in 1954. Growing up during the depression, Warren developed a tireless work ethic and worked hard to provide for his family—working at Rabun Lumber, Homestead Draperies, Haverty’s Furniture, hauling dirt for the construction of Hwy 17, before landing at GA-TN Mining Company where he started out working in the mine. He then became their first delivery driver, which he loved and retired after 28 years of service. Described as a home-body, he did enjoy fishing but mostly he loved to stay busy gardening, working on farm equipment and motors—he even built his own tractor—and caring for his animals. A loyal friend and dedicated husband and father, Warren was fair-minded but firm in dealing with people.  He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed life. Warren built his life on the solid foundation of Jesus and served Him at Avera Gospel Chapel. Warren will be greatly missed by his family, friends and community.

Warren was also preceded in death by five siblings, Watson Allen, Ruth Herring, Aaron “Buddy” Allen, Georgia Allen and Annabelle Allen. Survivors include his three sons, Andy Allen (Teresa), Stan Allen and Steve Allen (Jodie); three siblings, John Allen (Charlotte), Louise Allen and Esther McKie (Alan); six grandchildren, Heather Youngs (Bryan), Blake Allen (Maggie), Stephen Allen, Samuel Allen, Joshua Allen and Joseph Allen; one great grandson, Isaac Youngs; care-giver and special friend, Ella Edwards; nieces, nephews and many friends.  Pallbearers will be his grandsons—Blake Allen, Joseph Allen, Joshua Allen, Samuel Allen, Stephen Allen and Bryan Youngs.

The family will receive friends at James Funeral Home from 5:00 – 8:00 P.M. Sunday evening, April 22, 2018.

Heartfelt thanks is extended to Ella Edwards, his care-giver for the last two years.  The family appreciates her dedication and the loving, compassionate care shown to Warren—he loved her and considered her part of his family.

Candle Power

Make me a candle, Father.
When I strive to be a beacon,
Work in me to take away the painful glare,
Dull the searing brightness.
Mellow me, so I may draw close
To those in need.
Make me bearable.
And yet, keep me from growing dim
So that I cast no light upon the way.
I seek to serve You, Father,
And in so doing, serve the ones I love.
I cannot serve if I have no flame.
A candle I would be, Father--
Bright enough to point the way;
Soft enough to soothe those tear-filled eyes
Who look to me to find Your Word...Your love.
Set Your flame within me--
Make of me a candle for Your glory.
