Shirley Chance Clements, a beloved member of the Wrens community and cherished by all who knew her, passed away Thursday night, December 19, 2024, at Doctors Hospital in Augusta. Born on October 22, 1935, Shirley was a lifelong resident of Jefferson County, where she dedicated her life to her family, friends, and the spirit of community.
A proud graduate of Wrens High School in 1954, Shirley married the love of her life shortly after graduation and began a family that would grow to cherish her generous spirit and unwavering love. She held various positions throughout her career, including roles at Kaiser Chemicals, Lamb Brothers, and Red & White, but it is her long tenure as a waitress at Peggy's Restaurant that most identified her with the community. Shirley's warm and engaging personality shone through in every interaction, establishing her reputation as someone who never met a stranger. Her gregarious nature made her well-suited for her waitress job, where she not only served meals but also formed lasting connections with her patrons.
Shirley had a zest for life and was always busy, embodying a vibrant spirit reflected in her love for bright colors and flamboyant fashion. She took great pride in her appearance, and was always “dressed to the nines.” Her kindness and generosity were evident in her daily life; she continually looked for ways to help others, making her a beloved figure in her community.
In her leisurely hours, Shirley enjoyed bird watching, often studying birds through magazines and books, as well as reading romance novels. An avid animal lover, her canine companions brought her much joy. She also looked forward to her weekly salon appointments, where she not only tended to her hair but kept up with the happenings in the lives of others.
A member of Wrens Associated Reformed Presbyterian Church; Shirley’s faith was an integral part of her life. She loved her family unconditionally, which included her daughter, Colleen Williams and her husband, Bruce; her grandson, Scott Williams and his partner, Joel Harris; and her siblings Frank Chance (Beth), Grace Williams, and Ed Chance (Jane). In addition to her immediate family, she also leaves behind nieces, nephews, other extended family, and many friends who will miss her deeply. Honored to be pallbearers include David Chance, Mike Chance, Timmy Chance, Joe Harris, Greg New and Cole Rooks.
Shirley was predeceased by her husband, William "Clem" Franklin Clements, her parents, Mattie Rabun Chance and Ross Edgar Chance, and her brother-in-law, Melvin Williams.
A visitation will take place at James Funeral Home from 12:30-2:00PM Monday, December 23, 2024, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM officiated by Rev. Ed Chance. Interment will follow the funeral service at Wrens Memorial Cemetery.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Keysville Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center for their loving, compassionate and professional care given to Shirley. The family also suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Shirley’s honor be made to Keysville Nursing Home & Rehabilitation Center, PO Box 220, Keysville GA 30816.
Shirley Chance Clements will be remembered not only for her contributions to her community but also for the warmth and light she brought into the lives of others. Her transition into eternity is a profound loss to her family and all who knew her, but her legacy of love, kindness, and vivacity will continue to inspire those she touched.
