Ruth Newsome Powell, 85, loving wife of the late Aubrey William Powell, entered into her eternal rest early Thursday morning, August 17, 2023 at her daughter’s residence in Augusta. Funeral services to celebrate her life will be at 11:00AM Tuesday morning, August 22, 2023 in the James Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Ed Chance officiating. Interment will follow in the Wrens Memorial Cemetery.
One of six children born to the late Emma Alice Thigpen Newsome and the late Aaron “Bud” Newsome, Ruth was a lifelong resident of the Avera/Wrens area. Ruth attended Wrens High School, quitting just weeks before graduation to start her family and begin her work in the food industry. Ruth worked at Burger King in Thomson, Pansy’s in Louisville, The Big Top in Wrens, and retired after 30 years from Peggy’s Restaurant in Wrens. Her love for people, outgoing personality, great sense of humor and fun-loving spirit were instrumental in her success at her job and life, in general. Ruth made friends easily—she never met a stranger, just new friends—and always liked to know what was going on in their lives. She enjoyed going out to eat, travelling to the mountains, and just hanging out with friends and family, and attending family get-togethers. As a young woman, she accepted Jesus and attended Ways Baptist Church. Family was very important to her, especially in her later years, and was so very thankful for her children and grandchildren. Everyone who had the privilege of knowing her will miss that twinkle in her eyes and big smile. No one can replace the void she has left but her memories fill our hearts to overflowing.
Ruth is also preceded in death by her son, Danny Coleman, Jr.; and siblings, Agnes Mary Hall and Robert “Red” Newsome. Those left to cherish her memories include her children, James E. Newsome (Sharon) and Karen Brasher (Tim Fincher); three brothers, Charles Newsome (Nancy), Aaron Newsome Jr. (Lisa) and Albert Newsome (Joyce); seven grandchildren, Kenneth Maddox, Robert Maddox, Michael Murphy (April), Jacob Reeves, Jonathan Brasher (Kristen), Ashley Brasher and Ranee Conway (Bobby); eight great grandchildren, Riley James, Destiny Murphy, Danica Murphy, Maddie Murphy, Aiden Murphy, Abbie Murphy, Brynslee Conway and Alx Conway; nieces, nephews, other extended family and friends. Serving as pallbearers will be Michael Murphy, Jacob Reeves, Jonathan Brasher, Ashley Brasher, James Coleman and David Hall.
