Roy Thomas McGahee

S tapleton, GA  –         Roy Thomas McGahee, 81, loving husband of 57 years to Betty Brown McGahee, entered into his eternal home in Heaven Friday, November 27, 2015 at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM Monday, November 30, 2015 at Waldens United Methodist Church in Avera with Rev. Tommy Anderson officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

One of four boys born to the late Alice Louise Sheppard McGahee and the late George Carpenter McGahee Sr., Roy was a lifelong resident of Jefferson County, living within a mile of his birthplace. He married the love of his life in 1958 and worked hard to provide for his family, retiring with 35 years of service with the Georgia Department of Transportation where he purchased materials and maintained stock in the Tennille office. Roy loved his Lord and Savior, faithfully and actively serving Him from the time he accepted Christ on August 7, 1947 until he was no longer physically able at Waldens United Methodist Church, where he was a steward and served as Secretary/Treasurer of the Men’s Club for over 40 years. Roy loved his community and was a member of Woodmen of the World and the Sheriff’s Association. He enjoyed checking on his cows, fishing, dove hunting, and cooking but his true pleasure was socializing—he was a people-person and had a genuine love and concern for others. Being a Godly man, Roy never had anything negative to say about anyone, was always positive and agreeable—he did not like conflict and tried to show Christ’s love in all that he said and did.  Most of all, Roy cherished his family and loved them unconditionally. This loving husband, devoted father and loyal friend will be greatly missed by all who had the opportunity to know him. Roy has left a great void filled with wonderful memories.

Roy is also preceded in death by his brother, Johnny Samuel McGahee. Other survivors include his children, Joy McGahee Hadden (Murray) and Mike McGahee; two brothers, Maurice McGahee (Sydney) and George Carpenter McGahee, Jr. (Darlene); several nieces, nephews and a multitude of cousins.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that memorial contributions be made to Waldens UMC, c/o Patricia Kitchens, 1304 Hadden Pond Rd, Avera, GA 30803.

The family will receive friends at James Funeral Home from 4:00-6:00PM Sunday afternoon, November 29, 2015.

To Those Whom I Love

When I am gone, release me and let me go.
I have so many things to see and do.
You must not tie yourself to me with tears.
Be happy that I have had so many years.
I gave you my love, you can only guess
How much you gave me in happiness.
I thank you for the love each have shown
But now it is time I traveled on alone.
So grieve a while for me, if grieve you must,
Then let your grief be comforted by trust.
It is only for a while that we must part
So cherish the memories in your heart.
I will not be far away, for life goes on.
So if you need me, call and I will come.
Though you can not see or touch me, I will be near.
And if you listen with your heart, you will hear
All of my love around you soft and clear.
Then, when you must come this way alone,
I will greet you with a smile and a “Welcome Home”.
