The second child born to the late Ruth McNeely Hughes and the late LeeRoy Hughes, Richard grew up on his parent’s farm near Avera and received his education at Stapleton and Wrens schools. After marrying the love of his life on August 1, 1969, they spent most of their married life in the Louisville area. His occupations over the years were working on farms, but was mainly as a truck driver, transporting all types of products across the United States. Richard will be remembered as having a jovial nature. He loved gardening and raising many different animals, which became his “special” pets. His vegetable gardens were always well cared for. He also enjoyed fishing, especially with his family. When his wife’s health started to decline, he tenderly cared for her until her passing which left a big empty spot in his heart. The loss of his precious wife prompted him to grow nearer to God, giving his heart to Him which brought a very precious peace to his heart and soul.

Those cherishing precious memories include his children, Tracy Hughes of Shoals and Cathy and Dayton Ratzlaff of Louisville; seven grandchildren, Shaun Hughes, Casey and Tina Hughes, Sonya Ratzlaff, Logan Ratzlaff, Devin Ratzlaff, Jaci Ratzlaff and Janae Ratzlaff; one great grandson, Bennett Hughes; other extended family members and friends.
