Marviene Norton Mathis

Avera, GA  –              Marviene Norton Mathis, 90, loving wife of the late William Louis “Moon” Mathis, entered into her eternal rest Saturday morning, July 2, 2016 at her residence.  Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday afternoon, July 6, 2016 at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with the Reverend John Beck officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The eldest of four children born to the late Margaret Warren Norton and the late Zellie B. Norton, Marviene was a native of Spalding County, graduating from high school in McDonough, where she met and married the love of her life.  Moving to Avera, Moon’s hometown, in 1947, she joined Pleasant Grove Baptist Church where she faithfully served her Lord and Savior.  Being a “home body” at heart, Marviene took the responsibility of being a wife and mother seriously and made her family her top priority, making their home a comfortable, safe haven. She enjoyed cooking and working in the yard, especially her flowers. After Moon’s retirement, she did enjoy their camping trips in the mountains but was always happy to return home.  A loyal friend with a generous spirit, she had a servant’s heart with a quiet and unassuming demeanor—she never sought recognition or attention, preferring to work behind the scene. Her greatest pleasure was being with her family, especially the grandchildren and great grandchildren. Being reunited with her husband, Marviene’s eternity has begun where she is now basking in God’s glory.

Marviene is also preceded in death by her siblings, Sybil Cleveland and Chester Norton. Survivors include her children, Claude Mathis (Vi) of Thomson, Marsha Hughes and Warren Mathis (Pamela); a brother, Randall Norton (Sue); six grandchildren, Kim Prater (Two), Wes Mathis (Connie), Brooke Axon (Jay), Brad Hughes, Ashley Brown (Michael) and Jason Mathis (Holly); and ten great grandchildren, Logan Prater, Colton Mathis, Zoey Mathis, Drake Axon, Ava Axon, Sophie Brown, Ella Brown, Maxie Brown, Kaden Mathis and Kaleb Mathis. Serving as pallbearers will be Jay Axon, Michael Brown, Anthony Clark, Russell Clark, Brad Hughes and Jason Mathis. Junior pallbearers will be great grandsons, Drake Axon and Kaden Mathis.

The family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to Pleasant Grove Cemetery Fund, c/o Bobbie Williams, 1092 Oak Street, Avera GA 30803.

The family will receive friends at James Funeral Home from 6:00-8:00 P.M. Tuesday evening, July 5, 2016.

To Those Whom I Love

When I am gone, release me--let me go.
I have so many things to see and do.
You must not tie yourself to me with tears.
Be happy that I have had so many years.
I gave you my love, you can only guess
How much you gave me in happiness.
I thank you for the love each have shown
But now it is time I traveled on alone.
So grieve a while for me, if grieve you must,
Then let your grief be comforted by trust.
It is only for a while that we must part
So cherish the memories in your heart.
I will not be far away, for life goes on.
So if you need me, call and I will come.
Though you cannot see or touch me, I will be near.
And if you listen with  your heart, you will hear
All of my love around you soft and clear.
Then, when you must come this way alone,
I will greet you with a smile and a "Welcome Home".
