Martha Marie Giles Hamill
Thomson, GA – Martha Marie Giles Hamill, 89, loving wife of the late Albert James “Jim” Hamill, entered into her eternal rest Tuesday evening, February 28, 2017 at Thomson Health and Rehabilitation Center. A Celebration of Life service will be held at the Holy Cross Episcopal Church at 2:00 PM Saturday afternoon, March 11, 2017, with Rev. Raymond Whiting officiating.
Martha, a Valentine’s Day baby, was one of three girls born to the late Ruth Weimer Giles and the late David Giles, a prominent family in Chattanooga TN. She graduated in 1950 with a bachelor’s degree in home economics from the University of Georgia and worked as a therapeutic dietician for the Erlanger and Memorial Hospitals. After retiring, she and her husband relocated to Deland FL but in 1999 moved to Thomson where she attended Holy Cross Episcopal Church. She enjoyed gardening, baking, traveling, which she did a lot in her earlier years, word search puzzles, reading and visiting the library, which she did regularly. An animal lover, she had a special fondness for cats. Martha had a great sense of humor and was an intelligent, gentle, kind, soft-spoken person with a servant’s heart and a giving, generous nature. She lived a quiet life, enjoying good health and a clear mind until she became ill very recently. Having no children of her own, Martha had a genuine love for all of her nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed as she was loved by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Martha was also preceded in death by her sister, Alice Chancey; and a nephew, Ethan Rogers. Survivors include her step daughter, Joan Plunkett (Don) of Atlanta; sister Mary Jean Rogers of Hixson TN; three nieces, Martha Louise Barnes (Melvin), Leslye Chambers (Gunnar) and Meredith Sokoloski (Tim); two nephews, David Rogers and Seth Rogers (Cindy); numerous great nieces and nephews; and her church family and friends.
The family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Holy Cross Episcopal Church, c/o Faye Reeves, 515 Fluker Street, Thomson GA 30824.
The family will receive friends at Holy Cross Episcopal Church one hour prior to services—from 1:00-2:00 P.M.—on Saturday, March 11, 2017.
