Marguerite Perdue Newsome
Stapleton, GA -- Marguerite Perdue Newsome entered into eternal rest at home Friday December 28th in the presence of her family and her long-time caregiver Rachel Roberts.
A lifelong resident of Jefferson County, Georgia, Marguerite was born October 24, 1927 to the late Oscar Lee Perdue and Ollie Williams Perdue. She is survived by her daughter Mollie (Stephen) Sudhoff, of Glencoe, Illinois; grandson Peter Charles Newsome Sudhoff, of West Peoria, Illinois; a brother Ed L. (Betty Jean) Perdue of Wrens, and a sister Emily (Valas) Winters of Alliance, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her husband E. M. Newsome, a brother Glatney (Jimmie) Perdue, Augusta, and sisters Dorothy (James Walter) Jacobs of West Point and Marian (Walker) Lewis of Stapleton. She is survived by many nieces and nephews including Ike Lewis, Walker Lewis, Marilyn Nadolsky, Olly Axon, Linda Padgett, Elaine Dailey, Kathy Lewis, Cynthia Long, Walt Jacobs, Bill Jacobs, Kathryn Payne, Susan Holley, Jeanne Gay, Patti Rhodes, Bonnie Benedict, Debbie Shields, Marvilla Miller and Marian Gainor, and a cousin, Jimmy Williams.
Marguerite and E. M. were married July 1955 at the Stapleton Baptist Church where she was baptized in her youth and remained a member until her death. She was employed for most of her working life at the Bank of Stapleton but also worked at Rabun’s Grocery Store in Stapleton. She and her husband farmed for many years while working day jobs in town and owning rental homes which she managed until four years ago. Marguerite met her husband at Rabun’s store and was encouraged to date him by her father. They were happily married for 56 years.
In her later years Marguerite enjoyed travelling, especially to Illinois, Hawaii and Oregon. She loved Braves Baseball until her memory failed. She continued to do puzzles up until a few months ago. She enjoyed being active, starting out as a basketball player in high school. She enjoyed her community, her friends and her family. She was a kind and gentle soul who enjoyed the company of others and getting out of the house.
Services will be held at the James Funeral Home, 602 North Main Street, Wrens, Georgia with visitation 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, January 2, 2019. The funeral/memorial service will be Thursday, January 3, 2019, 2 p.m. with Rev. Joshua Mosley officiating. All are welcome. Burial following at the Stapleton Memorial Gardens, Stapleton.
Pallbearers will be her grandson Peter, great nieces and nephews Alisha Meyer, Rabun Lewis, Trent Holley, Grayson Rhodes, Jacob Gay, Jonathan Gay, Elizabeth Axon, Brian Doles, and any others in attendance. Honorary pallbearers will be Martha Ann Rabun Usry, Peggy Webb Hadden, Ellen Walden, Rachel Roberts, Connie Peters, Ponda Chalker, Wanda Gay, Willie Mae Pitts and the ladies of the T. E. L. Sunday school class at Stapleton Baptist.
