Larry Mack Holbert, 82, peacefully transitioned into his eternity at his residence on March 17, 2024. The family will receive friends at James Funeral Home from 6:00-8:00PM Wednesday evening, March 20, 2024. Graveside services with military honors will be held at 1:00PM in the Mt. Moriah Cemetery with his brother-in-law, Chaplain (COL) USA Ret Mark Fritch, officiating.
Born July 8, 1941, Larry grew up in Abbeville SC where he graduated high school. A proud veteran who served in the Navy during the Cuba Missile Crisis and Vietnam, Larry loved his country deeply and was greatly honored for the opportunity to serve. As he would explain, he was also thankful that serving his country enabled him “to see the world”. After an adventurous military career, he returned home to work as an industrial machinist at Milliken. In 1972, he found the love of his life in a social setting, embarking on a whirlwind romance that led to marriage. Larry moved his family to Myrtle Beach in 1987 where he worked in facility maintenance for hotels and apartments before relocating to Blythe GA in 1989 to work the night shift in the maintenance department at Gracewood State School and Hospital. He retired in 2003 at the age of 62 after years of dedicated service.
Described as a family man who loved beyond words, Larry was known for his simple wants and needs, gratitude for his blessings, loyalty, dependability, generosity, and great sense of humor. He was always willing to help others in any way he could – a true testament to his kind and caring nature.
During retirement, Larry cherished moments spent fishing, camping, and taking care of his animals – chickens, cats, and dogs. An avid fan of westerns, especially The Lone Ranger and Wagon Train, Larry could be found watching TV on the Western station for hours on end.
Larry Mack Holbert is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, JoAnn Sellers Holbert; children: Mack Holbert Jr. (Holley), Johnnie Simmons Jr., and Cynthia Berry (David); four grandchildren: Luke Aiden Holbert, Amanda Dawson (Justin Nettles), Coty Dawson (Lyndsie), and Selena Dixon; siblings: Sam Holbert (Marty) and Betty Fulmer; along with nieces, nephews, other extended family members, and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Ethel Irene Miller Holbert and James Holbert; as well as siblings Edward Holbert, Helen Boyd, Hazel Black, Gale Holbert, Dewey Holbert, and Jim Holbert.
Larry Mack Holbert will be remembered for his unwavering love for his family, dedication to service both in the military and throughout his career. His legacy of kindness and generosity will continue to live on through those who were fortunate enough to know him.
