John "Ed" Edward Shepherd, 82, peacefully entered into his eternal home in Heaven Saturday night, March 15, 2025, at Piedmont Summerville in Augusta.
Born on December 13, 1942, to the late Alma Combs Shepherd and the late Herndon Shepherd, in Virginia, Ed completed his education at Norway High School in Norway, South Carolina, graduating in 1961.
Following high school, Ed dedicated himself to a career that spanned various roles, showcasing his strong work ethic. He began as a supervisor with Colonial Bread before making a pivotal move to Wrens in 1966. Ed's versatility led him to work in sales at The Squire Shop under Mr. Buck Wren, and he later bought and successfully managed Snow White Cleaners until selling it in 1982. Ed then transitioned into insurance as an agent for American General, ultimately retiring in 2019 after a fruitful career in chemical sales and pressure washing.
Ed was known for his easy-going, friendly personality that allowed him to connect with people from all walks of life. His unwavering faith and devotion were evident as he accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior, serving diligently at Wrens Baptist Church shortly after relocating. His greatest joy came from working in the nursery, nurturing babies and young children, and ensuring that coffee was always available for the congregation before Sunday School. Ed expressed his love for family and friends through his kind actions and unwavering support.
An avid golf enthusiast, Ed cherished both playing and watching the sport on television. He found joy in tending to his koi pond and was known for his dedication to maintaining his lawn, especially during the fall when he meticulously raked and burned fallen leaves. Ed's talent as a cook was well recognized within his family, often hosting gatherings for his best friend, John Jones, and his wife.
Ed leaves behind a loving family who cherished every moment spent with him. He is survived by his devoted wife, Barbara Reese Shepherd; sons, John E. Shepherd Jr. (Vicki), Reese Walden (Jackie), and Austin Shepherd (Tracy); grandchildren, Jessica Henderson (John), Christopher Shepherd (Brytanny), Payne Walden, Carter Walden, Bristol Walden, Whit Shepherd, Gage Shepherd, Emily LeRoy, and Amy LeRoy; and great-grandchildren, Charlotte Henderson, Madeline Henderson, Evan Henderson, and Heidy Shepherd. Ed is also survived by his siblings, Joyce Miles, Elaine Smith, Freddie Shepherd, and Gerald Shepherd (Sara); along with nieces, nephews, other extended family, church family, and friends who will greatly miss him.
A visitation in honor of Ed will take place at Wrens Baptist Church on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, followed by a memorial service beginning at 3:00 PM officiated by Rev. James Barnes.
The family strongly suggests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Wrens Baptist Church, PO Box 217, Wrens GA 30833 earmarked “Ed Shepherd - Greater Things” or online at https://www.wrensbaptist.org, and clicking on the “GIVE” tab.
