John "Andy" Andrew McDonald

February 26, 1969 — August 2, 2024

Dearing, GA

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Andrew McDonald. Andy, as he was affectionately known, peacefully left this world on August 2, 2024, at Piedmont Augusta Hospital. He was a loving son, a God-fearing believer and loyal friend.

Born on February 26, 1969, Andy led a life filled with compassion and humility. He graduated from Wrens High School in 1988 and went on to earn an Associate degree from Augusta Tech with a specialization in Maintenance and HVAC. Throughout his career, Andy worked at various places, including Proctor & Gamble, where he dedicated 15 years of his life before its closure. He was currently employed with the Amazon Distribution Center in Appling.

Andy was more than just his profession; he was a man of many interests and hobbies. He had a deep love for music, especially Elvis Presley. As a former Little League coach and an Atlanta Braves enthusiast, Andy had an unwavering passion for baseball. His love for sports extended to his being an avid fan of the Georgia Bulldogs—GO DAWGS!!—and NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt. An Eagle Scout and skilled craftsman, Andy enjoyed working with his hands and doing home improvements.

Above all else, Andy cherished his family and friends. The group he held closest to his heart was the Old School Brotherhood—Russell Davis, Tim Hill, Glenn Poole, Lance Reeves, Michael Thigpen, Scott Tiner, and Bobby Watkins—whom he considered to be his brothers. His kind nature, dry sense of humor, and considerate demeanor endeared him to all who knew him.

One of his favorite times was the annual get together at Lake Oconee of the Old School Brotherhood every fall since 2021. Life happens and time passes, but this group of friends remained solid. Their annual get-together was precipitated by the passing of Nathan Poole as they wanted to reminisce, to continue building their relationships, and to cherish their time together. Even though Andy did not survive to attend this fall’s gathering, the brotherhood will keep his spirit alive in their memories and hearts.

After bravely battling cancer, Andy peacefully transitioned into eternity surrounded by his girlfriend of six years. He is preceded in death by his father John Royce McDonald. His survivors include his mother Faye Williams McDonald Dye and stepfather David Dye; his devoted life partner and caregiver Bren Young; as well as other extended family members, the Old School Brotherhood and a wide circle of friends.

The family will greet friends from 4:00-6:00PM Tuesday, August 6, 2024 at James Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will follow in the James Funeral Home Chapel officiated by the reverends Michael Thigpen, Russell Davis and Jamie Shope.

The tapestry of life that Andy wove with kindness, generosity and compassion towards others, intertwined with humor and loyalty as strong as steel will be cherished forevermore in our hearts.

May he rest in eternal peace knowing that his legacy will endure through the fond memories shared by those whose lives he touched.
