James “Phillip” Story, Sr.

Matthews, GA  –         James “Phillip” Story Sr., 72, loving husband of 45 years to Donna Jones Story, entered into his eternal rest Wednesday night, July 2, 2019, at his residence. Services to celebrate his life will be held in the Ways Baptist Church at 11:30 A.M. Saturday morning, July 6, 2019, with Rev. Wayne Turpin officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in the church cemetery.

The oldest of three sons born to the late Rosalyn Smallwood Story and the late James Thomas Story, Phillip grew up in Augusta and was a 1968 graduate of Richmond Academy.  After attending Brewton Parker for two years, he was drafted during the Viet Nam War, serving his country in telecommunications. Upon returning home, he worked as an insurance agent before becoming a lineman for BellSouth. Because of his failing health, he retired on full disability after 19 years of service.  Phillip managed the concessions business at the Masters Golf Tournament for over 25 years. He started work there as a Bottle Boy at the age of 8 and worked his way up to Manager, retiring after 54 years when the National organization took over the concessions. An outdoorsman, Phillip loved to hunt and fish.  During the summer, the family was often together camping and going to the lake. Phillip loved his Lord and Savior, serving Him at Ways Baptist Church where he was a deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, and an RA teacher. Described as a big man with a big heart, he was very sociable and made friends easily. Having a great sense of humor, Phillip loved to make people laugh—he was a great tease and “cut-up”.  His most prized treasure was his family who he loved unconditionally.  He was his sons’ greatest fan—Phillip never missed any of their practices or games and faithfully supported them in their endeavors. His grandchildren stole his heart and gave him much joy. A man of integrity and faith, Phillip loved his God, family, community and country and will be greatly missed.

Phillip was also preceded in death by both brothers, Clifford Story and Ronnie Story. Other survivors include his sons, James Phillip Story Jr. (Juliet) and Matthew Jones Story (Jacey); grandchildren, Trey Story, Kadin Story, Harrison Story, Madi Story and the greatly anticipated Ivy Story; and many friends.

Serving as pallbearers will be his three grandsons—Trey, Kadin and Harrison—as well as Clint Flowers, Mike Jones, Robert Jones, Wallace Jones and Tony Schneider.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 – 11:30 A.M. at Ways Baptist Church prior to the services Saturday morning, July 6, 2019.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that memorial contributions be made to Ways Baptist Church Pastor/Deacon Fund, c/o Peggiann Chalker, 314 Quaker Road, Wrens, GA 30833.

1 Corinthians 13 (KJV)

1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.

3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.

4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,

5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;

6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;

7 Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.

9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.

10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.

11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.
