James "J.C." Calvin May, known as J.C. to his loved ones and friends, tragically succumbed to injuries sustained from a house fire on January 28, 2024, at his residence and transitioned to his forever home in Heaven. He will be honored at a memorial service at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church at 3:00PM, Saturday, February 17, 2024 with the Rev. Mark Bowers officiating.
Born October 11, 1952, in Wrens to the late Janie "Lizzie" Newsome May and the late Johnnie Harrison May, J.C. was a lifelong resident of Jefferson County. After his sister, Jeanette May, died as an infant, J.C. was the youngest of the remaining six children.
J.C. had a resilient spirit that shone through even in the face of adversity. As a young man, he attended Wrens High School and graduated in 1970. During his time in school and after graduating, he worked for Charlie Phillips at his service station. However, fate had something else in store for J.C. In August 1970, while on his way home for lunch, J.C. was involved in a serious motorcycle accident that left him with significant head trauma and other injuries. This accident incapacitated him for many months and presented him with several long-term disabilities. It was a challenging time for J.C., but he faced it with unwavering faith, incredible strength, and indomitable determination.
Despite spending much of his time alone, J.C. cherished the moments he spent with his beloved family. Their love meant more to him than words could express. As a young man, J.C. accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior and faithfully served Him as a past member of Reedy Creek Baptist Church and as a current member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
J.C.'s considerate nature endeared him to everyone he met. He had a kind heart and loved people genuinely. Strangers were simply friends he hadn't met yet; J.C. enjoyed meeting new people and cherished the connections he formed along the way.
One of J.C.'s greatest joys in life was indulging in good food and good fellowship. He reveled in the simple pleasures of sharing laughter and stories around the table with loved ones or new acquaintances. He had a way of making people feel welcomed and valued. J.C.'s infectious warmth left a lasting impression on all those fortunate enough to cross paths with him.
His adventurous spirit also led him to embark on memorable journeys alongside his best friend, Teddy Phillips. Whether they were traveling near or far, J.C. cherished these times spent exploring and creating cherished memories with his dear friend.
J.C. will be deeply missed by his family and friends. Those left to honor his memory are his siblings: John T. May (Catherine), William G. May (Pat), Joe H. May (Carol), Elizabeth M. Gooch, and H. G. May. J.C. also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, church family, and friends who were blessed to have known him.
