Hugh Harris Wheeler

Wrens, GA  – Hugh “Harris” Wheeler, 85, loving husband to Beulah Lee Coleman Wheeler, entered into rest Thursday afternoon, October 10, 2013 at University Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 3:00PM on Sunday, October 13, 2013 in the James Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Stan Littleton officiating. Private interment will follow on Tuesday, October 15, 2013 in the GA Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Milledgeville.

One of eleven children born to the late Cloris “Estene” McGahee Wheeler and the late Joe Edgar Wheeler, Harris was a lifelong resident of Jefferson County. He proudly served our country in the Army during World War II, receiving the WWII Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal (Japan).  After returning home from the war, he worked as a Nursing Assistant at the Uptown Division of the VA Hospital in Augusta, retiring after 30 years of service. Harris was a hard worker and good provider for his family. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, sports—especially boxing and NASCAR, and just “riding” in the country.  His greatest joy was spending time with his family—he loved each and every one unconditionally.  Even though death has left us a heartache that no one can heal, love has left us memories no one can steal.

Harris is also preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Twila Hadden Wheeler; and seven siblings, Frank Wheeler, J.E. Wheeler, Lorene Temples, Dorothy W. Thompson, Edward Luckey, Wayne Wheeler and AD Wheeler. Other survivors include his children, Travis Wheeler (Teresa), Dennis Wheeler, Rachel Ellis (Lester) of Martinez, Janice Prickett (Jerry) of Cumming, and C. L. Reese (Ann) of Vidalia; three siblings, Betty Jean W. Murphy, Billy W. Wheeler (Kathleen) and Vera E. Walden; eight grandchildren, Kevin Akridge (Brandi), Joey Wheeler (Felicia), Suzanne Wheeler Snipes (Mike), Colby Ellis, Jessica Ellis, Crystal Solis (Seteban), Brittany Prickett and Amber Prickett; twelve great grandchildren, Cole Bryant, Kerigan Bryant, Landen Bradford, Hunter Bradford, Ethan Solis, Tristan Solis, Adrianna Solis, Sylvia Solis, Ivana Solis, Gabriella Prickett, Ally Prickett, and Eddie Prickett; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Pallbearers will be Jerry Burks, Tony Wheeler, Aubrey Wheeler, Colby Ellis, Joey Wheeler, Mike Snipes, Jerry Walden, Kevin Akridge and Hunter Bradford.

The family will receive friends at James Funeral Home on Sunday, October 13, 2013 from 1:00–3:00 PM prior to services.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to James Funeral Home, PO Box 588, Wrens, GA  30833.

I'm Free

Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free.
I'm following the path God laid for me.
I took His hand when I heard Him call;
I turned my back and left it all.
I could not stay another day
To laugh, to love, to work or play.
Tasks left undone must stay that way;
I found that place at the close of the day.
If my parting has left a void,
Then fill it with remembered joy.
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss--
Ah yes, these things I too will miss.
Be not burdened with times of sorrow;
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow.
My life's been full, I savored much;
Good friends, good times, a loved ones touch.
Perhaps my time seems all too brief;
Don't lengthen it now with undue grief.
Lift up your heart and share with me,
God wanted me now--He set me free!
