It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Hazel Smith Carter, who peacefully left us on January 11, 2025, at the age of 76. Hazel was born in Augusta on May 23, 1948 to the late Ira Lewis Rachels and the late Stella L Williams Rachels. Throughout her life, she touched the hearts of those who knew her with her kindness, strength, and unwavering love for her family and friends.

Hazel’s life was marked by her dedication to those she loved. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and friend. Her infectious smile, warm heart, and caring nature will be missed by all who were fortunate to know her.

Hazel grew up in Augusta and was a longtime resident of the Hephzibah-Keysville area. She worked as a textile worker at John P King Mill, retiring in 1981. She found joy in traveling, collecting Elvis memorabilia, listening to old country music, and spending time with her family.

Hazel was also preceded in death by her spouse Frank Carter; all of her siblings Dorothy Davenport, Franklin Rachels, James Rachels, Joanne Rachels, and Ronnie Rachels; grandson Derek Smith; and great-granddaughter Averie Jewel Miles.

She is survived by her children Lewis “Chew” Smith (Cindy), Mary Combs, Lynn Unruh (Kenneth), and Don Smith.
