Harvey Gene Hayes

August 29, 1935 — June 15, 2024

Blythe, GA

Harvey Gene Hayes, 88, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, transitioned into his home in Heaven on June 15, 2024, at Lake Crossing Health Center in Appling, GA. His passing is deeply mourned by his family and friends.

Harvey was born on August 29, 1935, in Harlem, GA. At a young age, he moved to Blythe to live with his older brother, Vester. After graduating high school, Harvey began his career as a tile setter alongside Vester. Known for his work ethic and precision Harvey dedicated over 50 years to perfecting his craft before retiring.

Throughout his life, Harvey was known for his jovial nature. He had a knack for jokes and pranks and always found joy in making others laugh. His generosity knew no bounds; often giving anonymously to worthy causes and helping those in need without seeking recognition. He had a kind and tender heart that endeared him to all who knew him.

In addition to his career and philanthropic endeavors, Harvey served as the former mayor of Blythe. He cherished his community deeply and was actively involved in making it a better place for everyone.

Harvey's hobbies included hunting and fishing, but above all, he cherished spending time with his family. Family night dinners were a highlight for him, and he loved dining out at local “cafes”. Having accepted the free gift of salvation through Jesus Christ and being God’s child, Harvey, after many years of supporting Blythe Methodist and their programs in any way he could (again, often anonymously) finally joined their fellowship in his later years.

Harvey is survived by his devoted daughter-in-law Bonnie Reville Hayes; grandchildren Heather Mims Cisneros, Karen Mims Carroll (Chris), Jessica Mims Valley (Chris), and Ashleigh Mims; great-grandchildren Kyler Carroll, Kayden Carroll, Jackson Jenkins, Jaleigh Read, Randie Nickel; sisters Grace Mysinger (Johnny) and Reba Lyons (Charles); special niece and nephew Charleen Hayes and Ricky Hayes; as well as nieces, nephews, other extended family members, and numerous friends.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Betty Greiner Hayes; beloved son Randy Hayes; parents Mattie Owens Hayes Keller and Vester Lee Hayes; siblings Vester H. Hayes, Martha Mullins¸ Teddy Hayes¸ Jesse Hayes¸ and Nathan Hayes.

Visitation will be held Thursday evening, June 20, 2024 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at James Funeral Home. The funeral service to celebrate his life will take place on Friday morning, June 21, 2024, at 11:00 AM in the James Funeral Home Chapel officiated by Rev. Thurman Norville. Interment will follow in the Blythe Methodist Church Cemetery. Honored to serve as pallbearers include Ricky Hayes, Joseph Hayes, Jeremy Winter, Brett Chancey Jr., Charles Dozier and Gary Dozier.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff of Lake Crossing Health Center and the staff of Heartland Hospice for their excellent, professional and loving care.

Harvey Gene Hayes will be remembered for his positive outlook on life despite facing numerous hardships. His legacy of kindness, laughter, and generosity will forever live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him. May he rest in peace.
