Elsie Allen Usry
Wrens, GA – Elsie Allen Usry, 96, loving wife of the late Everett Cull “Boss” Usry, entered into her eternal rest Friday evening, January 5, 2018 at University Hospital McDuffie in Thomson. Funeral services to celebrate her life will be held in the James Funeral Home Chapel at 2:00 P.M. Monday afternoon, January 8, 2018 with Reverend Chad Watkins officiating. Interment will follow in the Wrens Memorial Cemetery.
The youngest of ten born to the late Anna Phillips Allen and the late Samuel F. Allen, Elsie was a lifelong resident of Wrens. She quit school as a teenager, working on the family farm and helping her mother with the household upkeep. She met and married the love of her life—a farmer—just before her 21st birthday. Growing up during the depression, Elsie was no stranger to hard work and was always busy providing a safe, comfortable home for her family. She loved to garden, canning and freezing vegetables, and was a fantastic cook and baker. She was famous for her homemade biscuits which she made for every meal. She enjoyed the family camping trips and traveling. Elsie loved her Lord and Savior, serving Him as a member of Wrens United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School and was very active until her health decline. Dedicating her life to God, she read her Bible daily—she could be found every morning at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee reading her Bible and praying. These quiet times were essential to her. Her work ethic, selfless sacrifice, devotion, integrity, faithfulness and loving spirit are exemplary of the Proverbs 31 woman. She had an unconditional love for her family and was most content in their presence. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren stole her heart and provided great joy. Memories of this woman of faith sustain us through this time of grief, knowing that we will one day be reunited with her in our eternal home.
Elsie is also preceded in death by her granddaughter, Connie Ann Tidwell; and all nine of her siblings, Floyd, Florence, Albert, Hattie, Freddie, Milo, Eugene, Alma and Lee. Survivors include her two daughters, Ann Usry Tidwell of Smyra, and Ellen Usry Bailey of Marietta; three grandchildren, Misty Tidwell Gardner (Billy), Rodney Bailey (Sherry) and D. D. Bailey (Julie); five great grandchildren, Justin Gardner, Russell Gardner, Cam Bailey, Wyatt Bailey and Marti Ann Bailey; one great-great grandson, Grayson Wyatt Gardner; and many nieces and nephews. Serving as pallbearers will be Cam Bailey, D. D. Bailey, Rodney Bailey, Wyatt Bailey, Billy Gardner and Justin Gardner.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that memorial contributions be made to her beloved church--Wrens United Methodist Church, 202 Russell Street, Wrens GA 30833.
The family will receive friends at James Funeral Home Monday afternoon, January 8, 2018, from 12:30 – 2:00 P.M. prior to the services.
