Eldridge "Bert" Cuthbert Smith, Jr.

February 20, 1955 — October 29, 2023

Wadley, GA

Eldridge "Bert" Cuthbert Smith, Jr., 68, peacefully entered into his eternal rest Sunday, October 29, 2023 at Madison Heights in Evans. Graveside services will be held at 2:00PM Thursday afternoon, November 2, 2023 in the Wadley City Cemetery with Rev. David Brown officiating.  The family will greet friends at James Funeral Home from 6:00-8:00PM Wednesday evening, November 1, 2023.

Bert was a man whose life was marked by a deep love for his family, unwavering loyalty to his friends, and a strong dedication to his work. Born on February 20, 1955, in Swainsboro, he grew up in Wadley.
From a young age, Bert displayed great determination and patriotism. After graduating from Wadley High School in 1973, he felt compelled to serve his country and joined the Army. His time in the military instilled in him valuable qualities such as discipline, perseverance, and an unwavering sense of duty.

Upon returning home from the Army, Bert embarked on a fulfilling career at Fulghum Industries as an iron worker. For over thirty years, he dedicated himself to his work with passion and integrity. His commitment shone brightly throughout his tenure until health reasons necessitated his retirement.

Outside of his professional life, Bert had a range of interests that brought him both joy and fulfillment. Locally known as a grill master, he achieved barbeque greatness with his specialty—perfectly seasoned BBQ chicken. He took great pleasure in sharing his grilling talents with family and friends.

An avid motorcycle enthusiast, Bert's heart truly belonged to Harley Davidson. He loved the feeling of freedom that riding his Harley brought him and often chuckled at other motorcycles he affectionately referred to as "crotch rockets." In every aspect of his life, it was clear that Bert was a Harley man through and through.

Preferring solitude over crowds, Bert appreciated the simple joys in life and but found immense happiness being surrounded by those closest to him. His beloved daughter, Holly, held a special place in his heart and brought him endless joy and happiness. His loyalty and generosity were evident in every aspect of his life, making him not just a loner but a dedicated companion to those he called friends.

Bert was preceded in death by his father, Eldridge Cuthbert Smith Sr. (known as “our daddy”); his mother, Iris Stevens Scruggs Smith Scarboro; step-father, Miles Scarboro Sr. (known as “daddy”); and his brother James Steven Scruggs.  Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Holly Smith Thompson (Richard); son, Cade Smith; his sister, Dollie S. Evans; as well as nieces, nephews, and friends.

As we bid farewell to Bert, let us remember the kindness he showed and the joy he brought into our lives.  May his soul find eternal peace and may we find solace in our memories of him.
