Doyle “Gwannie” LeGwannie Dixon

Stapleton, GA  –         Doyle “Gwannie” LeGwannie Dixon, 75, husband of 47 years to Geraldine Hopkins Dixon, entered into his eternal rest Thursday morning, July 12, 2018 at Jefferson Hospital in Louisville. Graveside services to celebrate his life will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday afternoon in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Avera with Rev Bill Seaman officiating.

A native of Avera, Gwannie was the eldest of five children born to the late Betty Lou Perdue Dixon and the late David Dernier Dixon. He attended grade school in Avera and after graduating from Glascock County Consolidation High School, he married his high school sweetheart and moved to Wadley. After their divorce, he moved to Selma AL to join his family and where he met his current wife. In 1998, Gwannie moved his family to Rogers, Arkansas where he bought a blueberry farm and worked as the custodian for Rogers High School until he was forced to retire after becoming disabled from the loss of his leg due to diabetes. He loved anything and everything to do with farming, gardening—he was known for his onions and sweet potatoes—and raising and selling farm animals—rabbits, goats, and chickens.   His favorite pastimes were going fishing and cooking.  He was also known as a collector of anything old or anything to do with farming and farm equipment. (To some, his treasures might be considered junk.) Having a rambunctious personality and a great sense of humor, he was out-going, out-spoken and never met a stranger. A compassionate man, he would always put others and their needs before his own.  Gwannie had an absolute, unconditional love for his family and his canine buddies—Bear, Monkey and Socks.  In the last few years as his health continued to decline, his greatest desire was to return home—a place of where, after having accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior, he was baptized by a young Rev. Bill Seaman; and a place that held fond memories of family and friends. Gwannie made his final trip home, arriving Wednesday night to his daughter’s residence in Stapleton. Then, Thursday morning, he continued his journey to his eternal home in Heaven where he is no longer suffering.  Death leaves a void that no one can fill; but love leaves us memories that no one can steal.

Gwannie is also preceded in death by his granddaughter, Alisa Tobin. Other survivors include children Barry Chalker (LaDonna), Angela Sebastian (John), and Melisa Dixon; four siblings, Loyce Dixon (Marilyn), Keith Dixon (Wanda), Delaine Oglesby (R.C.) and David Dixon (T.J.); seven grandchildren, Justin Chalker (Shandi), Karrie Carr, Danielle King (Bill), Joshua Chalker (Will), Joseph Beggs Jr., Nolan Dixon Sebastian and Sarah Adele Sebastian; seven great grandchildren; cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends.

Because of the unexpected nature of their loss, the family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made directly to James Funeral Home, P.O. Box 588, Wrens, GA  30833.
