Donald Eugene Gay

Wrens, GA  –              Donald Eugene Gay, 79, loving husband of Virginia Williford Gay, entered into his eternal rest late Saturday morning, February 17, 2018 at Thomson Health and Rehabilitation Center. Funeral services will be held in the James Funeral Home Chapel at 3:00 P.M. Thursday afternoon, February 22, 2018 with Reverend Sean Heggood officiating.  Interment will follow in the Wrens Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

The youngest of three children born to the late Alice Templeton Gay and the late Robert Gay, Don was a lifelong resident of Jefferson County. After his father suffered a debilitating stroke, he quit school at the age of 12 to take care of his mother and father, as well as work the family farm.  Later, to supplement income, he drove a school bus for many years. Don also learned the trade of auto mechanic, working for Lloyd’s Auto, Wrens Tire, Henderson Chevrolet and Old Capitol Motors as well as operating a small shop at his home repairing small engines. He loved gospel music and attended the gospel sings in the area.  He especially loved going to Purvis School House and listening to the Southern Song Masters, his favorite group.  Gospel music provided an escape from the trial and tribulations of his life and reinforced his love for his Savior. A man of few words, Don was a loyal, dependable husband and friend. We will miss hearing his “them there doin’s” and are thankful for the privilege of knowing him.

Don is also preceded in death by his two siblings, Roy Gay and Inez Landrum. Others left to mourn his passing include his nephew and care giver, Jeff Norton (Debbie); his nephews, David Gay, Larry Gay, Rusty Manning and John Manning; and his niece, Donna Williams. Serving as pallbearers will be John Manning, Rusty Manning, Tracy Neal, Robbie Prescott, Don Williford and Keith Williford.

The family will receive friends at James Funeral Home from 2:00-3:00 P.M. Thursday afternoon, February 22, 2018—one hour prior to services.
