Clifford Allen May

Hephzibah, GA  –       Clifford Allen May, 80, loving husband to Gloria Jean Boyd May, entered into his eternal rest early Thursday morning, November 5, 2020 at University Hospital in Augusta. Funeral services to celebrate his life with will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday afternoon, November 7, 2020 in the James Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Brian Simmons officiating. Interment will follow in Graniteville Cemetery in Graniteville SC.

Because of the family’s concern for public health and safety during this COVID-19 pandemic, the family requests that social distancing and other safety precautions be followed.  The wearing of face masks is strongly encouraged.

One of eight children born to the late Hazel Amelda Strain May and the late Allen May, Cliff was a native of Mandeville Louisiana but has lived in the Augusta area since he was two. After completing the 11th grade, he quit attending Richmond Academy in order to help support the family. Even as a young boy, he was very industrious and worked hard.  Cliff had a newspaper route as well as helped his father sell vegetables and fruit. His ability to put people at ease enabled him to excel in his work.  Throughout his career, he worked as a route salesman for Pet, Borden’s and various other companies before going to work for Coca Cola, retiring after 15 years of service. In his youth, Cliff attended Lakeview Baptist Church and more recently Word of Aflame Pentecostal Church where he was rebaptized and rededicated his life to his Lord and Savior. Some of Cliff’s best days were fishing with his best friend, Herman Odom. He was an avid LSU and Atlanta Braves fan.  Cliff also enjoyed card games, reading the newspaper, especially the comic section, and going on family outings. He liked to laugh, joke around, and share the joke of the day.  It brought him joy to bring laughter to his family and friends. Above all else, Cliff loved and was devoted to his family. He will be remembered for his loving, hard-working and generous spirit by those he has left behind.

Cliff also is preceded in death by his granddaughter, Brianna Simmons; and brother, Wayne May. Other survivors include his daughters, Tammy Simmons (Brian) and Jennifer Greeley (Richard); five siblings, James May, Lamar May (Drea), Glenn May, Robert May (Frankie), Ann Stults and Annette Nichols (Charles); nine grandchildren, Joshua Simmons, Sierra Simmons, Marc Simmons, Natasha Van Arkel (Dustin), Ember Gunn (Douglas), Justin Greeley, Graysen Greeley and Brooke Greeley; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, church family and friends. Serving as pallbearers will be Richard Greeley, Joshua Simmons, Marc Simmons, Douglas Gunn, Justin Greeley and Graysen Greeley.

The family will receive friends at James Funeral Home from 12:00 – 1:00 P.M. Saturday afternoon, November 7, 2020 prior to the services.
