Charles Quentin "C.Q." Carroll

Charles Quentin “C.Q.” Carroll passed away peacefully on November 22, 2019, at the age of 99, after suffering a stroke while a resident at Comfort Creek Nursing Home in Wadley, GA.

Born October 10, 1920 in Richmond County, GA, C.Q. graduated from Hephzibah High School in 1940 and immediately set off on a 20 year career in the U.S. Navy.  He served during  World War II and the Korean Conflict, in both the invasions of North Africa/Sicily theatres, as well as the Pacific. C.Q. was awarded several service medals, including a Purple Heart for injuries sustained when the USS T.H, Bliss was torpedoed in the Mediterranean in 1942, and a commendation for his actions resulting in the saving of several of his shipmates’ lives during that attack.  In 1945, during shore leave, C.Q. married the love of his life Reba Pauline Farrow, of Columbia County, GA.  Following two short term shore duty assignments, they settled in his final duty assignment in Beaufort, S.C. where the two lived 30+ years with their daughter Louise and son Charles.  Retiring from the Navy in 1960, C.Q. was employed by the local Sears, Roebuck and Company franchise where he excelled in sales and service and received several regional and national awards. The hours of this assignment allowed C.Q. to pursue one of his biggest passions, fishing the tidal creeks of Beaufort County with friends and family, where he was known as one of the most successful anglers in the county.  Eventually, C.Q. and Reba relocated to Hephzibah, GA, close to family, where they lived until the passing of Reba in 2000.  C.Q. meanwhile had not been idle and had sold a piece of property purchased in 1948 in Columbia County and turned 240 acres into a 1,300 acre estate with pieces of property in Burke, Jenkins, Screven and Jefferson counties in GA.  C.Q. moved to the largest of these parcels to oversee the management of his well establish pine tree farms, including the re-establishment of a Long Leaf Pine Ecosystem on the 600 acres he called home, north of Midville, GA.  C.Q. took great pride in that piece of property in particular, ever ready to show or discuss the improvements he made to the ecosystem there including the restoration of several native grass and tree species, and virtually every type of oak tree he could find, many of them raised from potted acorns planted by him personally.  C.Q. was highly regarded by several organizations he was actively involved in such as The Bobwhite Quail Initiative, The National Wild Turkey Federation, The Longleaf Alliance, and various land stewardship organizations, even being named Forest Steward of the Year for Burke County, GA.

But of all these passions, he was best known for his love and devotion to family.  He was the rock that all family could count on.  From brothers and sisters, to children and grandchildren, his entire family always knew he would be there for them when the going got tough.  His kindness, generosity, and guidance will be missed by all.

C.Q. is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Reba; brothers, J.R., David, George and Jesse; and his sisters, Mary, Margie, Arretta and Ruth.  He is survived by his daughter, Louise Knight (George) and son, Charles (Beth); four grandchildren, Christopher Knight (Debbie), Lea Padgett (Cliff), Erin Young (Shane) and Trevor Carroll (Erin); as well as 8 great grandchildren.

Services, followed by visitation with the family, will be held at the James Funeral Home in Wrens, GA on December 7, 2019, at 1:00pm.
