Darlene Amerson Atkinson
Matthews, GA – Carol “Darlene” Amerson Arkinson, 64, loving wife of 32 years to Johnny Atkinson, entered into her eternal rest Tuesday afternoon, October 30, 2018 at University Hospital McDuffie after sustaining fatal injuries in an automobile accident. Funeral services to celebrate her life will be held in the James Funeral Home Chapel at 2:00 P.M. Saturday afternoon, November 10, 2018, with the Reverends Ed Chance and Chad Watkins officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Moriah Church Cemetery.
A lifelong resident of Matthews, Darlene was one of eight born to the late Mary Agnes Coxwell Amerson and the late John Henry Amerson. She left Wrens High School after the 10th grade in order to help her family financially. After working at various jobs, she landed a position at Stapleton Garment Company, working there 20 years until it closed. After six months of unemployment, she started working at Peggy’s, a job she absolutely loved as it allowed her to serve others and interact with people. During the 22 years she worked at Peggy’s, she developed many relationships, especially with her co-workers, and had many loyal customers and friends. Darlene was a hard-worker but in her spare time she loved to shop and travel—she especially enjoyed the north Georgia mountains. She loved her Lord and Savior and was a member of Mt. Moriah United Methodist Church. Darlene was a gregarious person and never met a stranger. A “straight-shooter”, you always knew where you stood with her. Darlene faced all struggles in her life with a fierce determination and positive attitude. A loyal friend, loving wife and dedicated mother, she loved her family unconditionally and with her whole being. Darlene loved greatly and was greatly loved. Her death leaves a void that no one can fill; but her love leaves memories that no one can steal.
Darlene was also preceded in death by her brothers, Lonnie Amerson, Merle Amerson and Lewis Amerson. Other survivors include her children, Kellie P. Brassell (Lewis) and James Atkinson (Jill); four sisters, Agnes Prickett, Nora Newsome, Sherry Grindle (Raymond) and Sandra Willard; eleven grandchildren, Jonathan Brassell (Ashley), Leslie Brassell, Misty Atkinson, Brittany Atkinson, Calie Atkinson, Austin Jennings, Brianna Weeks, Toby Bass, Michael Bass, McKenzie Bass and Preston Bass; five great grandchildren, Gracelyn McCoy, G. B. McCoy V, Travis Atkinson, Case Brassell and Toby Bass Jr; in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends. Pallbearers will be Toby Bass, G.B. McCoy, Preston Prescott, Cody Simpson, Keith Simpson, Kevin Simpson and Luke Simpson. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Peggy’s Coffee Club.
The family will receive friends at James Funeral Home from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. Friday evening, November 9, 2018.
Because of their unexpected loss, the family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made directly to James Funeral Home, P.O. Box 588, Wrens GA 30833.
