Carlton Edgar Bennett, 86, began his heavenly experience on the early morning of December 28, 2022, surrounded by family in the comfort of his Indiana home. Services to celebrate his life will be held in the James Funeral Home Chapel at 2:00PM Saturday afternoon, January 7, 2023, with Rev. James Lovell officiating. Interment will follow in the Wrens Memorial Gardens.
Carlton was born on March 25, 1936, in Jacksonville FL to the late James Bennett and the late Pearl Bucklew. He began his first job as a paper boy, and at the age of 12 he was putting air conditioners in homes. Despite being a great student, he would leave school at 15 to become a husband and father. He would later return to Jacksonville School of Technology to become certified to read blueprints. However, there is no doubt that he taught those instructors a few things. With perfection, Carlton would build boats, fencing, and homes all while being a husband, a father, and serving as a member of the Civil Air Patrol.
With just $100 for supplies, he would start his own business of building steps. He would later retire from his business to work as an antique dealer and auctioneer, but he would continue to build and refurbish houses and furniture with much love in his heart for the recipients. Alzheimer’s and tremors would later rob him of the ability to build his masterpieces, but it only made his heart grow stronger for his family and his Lord and Savior. Next time you are sitting on the banks with a cane pole or a rod and reel in your hands, make sure you save a spot for him.
Carlton is also preceded in death by his children, Junior Sigmond and Wanda Tyson; grandchildren, Carlton Bennett, Tammy Crowder and Sammy “Buford” Tyson; and siblings, James “JC” Bennett, Charles “Chester” Bennett, Randy Bennett, Grady Bennett, Carol “Janie” Monroe and Elzie “Della” Beck. Survivors include his crew of children, Albert Bennett, James Bennett, John Bennett (Melanie), Sherry Able (Ron), Kay Burke (Dean), Stephanie Mills (Timothy) and Millicent Sullivan; siblings, Mary Elizabeth “Lubba” Passmore, Erma Hill, James “JH” Bennett, Hazel Bennett, Troy Bennett, and William “Billy” Bennett; thirty (30) grandchildren; sixty-five (65) great grandchildren; ten (10) great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other extended family.
