Billy Don Hughes, 87, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, peacefully transitioned into his eternity Thursday morning, September 26, 2024, at his residence in Matthews, Georgia.
Born on June 1, 1937, in Monroe, Louisiana, Billy lived a life characterized by devotion to his family, a strong sense of community, and a deep passion for the things he loved. He grew up in Monroe, where his enthusiasm for sports led him to graduate from West Monroe High School. Following high school, he attended Louisiana Tech University, excelling in football and track, where he earned numerous awards and medals. His love for his country saw him quit school to join the Army, where he served honorably until July 1962, with his final duty station at Ft. Gordon. It was there that he met the love of his life, and after a whirlwind romance, they were married in 1960.
After leaving the Army, he returned to Louisiana to begin their family. Soon thereafter, they moved back to Augusta, where Billy began a fulfilling career with Deerfield Specialty Paper Company. He dedicated over 28 years of service and retired as a plant supervisor, reflecting his commitment and strong work ethic. The Hughes family made their forever home in Matthews in 1967, where they created many cherished memories together.
Billy was a true family man whose devotion to his family was evident in all that he did. He was known for his loyalty as a friend and his generosity and compassion toward others. Billy had a natural ability to connect with people; he never met a stranger and was often described as a great storyteller. His friends and family will remember him for his vivacious spirit and the warmth he brought to every interaction.
In addition to his family and work, Billy had a myriad of interests and hobbies that brought him joy. An avid hunter, he was a proud member of the King Bee Hunting Club. A talented cook, he enjoyed preparing meals for his family and friends, showcasing his culinary skills at gatherings. He was an unwavering supporter of the Atlanta Braves and found great pleasure in traveling, often setting off on spontaneous adventures across the United States or embarking on delightful cruises. In quiet moments, he could often be found tinkering in his workshop, engaged in woodwork, home repairs, or simply enjoying the great outdoors.
Billy leaves behind his loving wife, Geraldine Anderson Hughes; children, Charles "Chucky" Hughes, Gary Hughes (Kay), Donna H. Cheeks (Rod), and Jimmy Hughes (Zeh); seven grandchildren, Amanda Walden (Barrow), Kenneth Hughes (Katie), Zach Hughes (Ashley), Kaytie-lyn Hughes, Tara Parrish (Clay), Allie Hughes, and Brooke Hughes; ten great-grandchildren, Bree Hopper (Josh), Treb Walden, Dalton Hughes, Addison Hughes, Peyton Hughes, Gavin Hughes, Walker Hughes, Cole Parrish, Chloe Parrish, and Charli Parrish; great-great grandson, Rhett Hopper; two brothers, James Hughes and Larry Wayne Hughes (Joy); and a host of other extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gladys Lambert Hughes and Luther Hughes; and two sisters, Vivian Bass and Charlene Murphy.
